National Library Day is celebrated in India on 12th of August Every year in memory of Birthday of Mr. S.R. Ranganathan, the man who gave a lot in Library and Information Science field.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh said here today that Modi’s “New India” will realize former President Late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s “Vision 2020”. Addressing a Memorial programme organized by Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam International Foundation at New Delhi, on the eve of the third death anniversary of former President Late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, he said, he was fortunate to have personally known Late Dr APJ Kalam from close quarters, both as a human being as well as a scientist. He said, it was, therefore, as a humble tribute to this great luminary that soon after he (Dr Kalam) passed away while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong, it was decided in the Ministry of Northeast / DoNER to immediately set up “APJ Kalam Chair” in IIM Shillong, which has now further developed into “APJ Kalam Study Centre” He said, it was a providential coincidence that he had the opportunity of frequently interacting with APJ Kalam during the last few months before his death, primarily because, the late President had started taking interest in research on the causes and prevention of cancer and the study of various carcinogens. Though Kalam was not a Medical professional, he said, it was a natural craving for scientific research inside him which inspired him to look at every aspect of life through a scientific prism, which is the reason that even though he was a student of physics and aeronautics by education and training, he got interested in medical research when he observed the rising prevalence of cancer in India. The greatest hallmark of Late APJ Kalam’s personality, Dr Jitendra Singh said, was that there was not a fraction of a difference between his public image and his conduct in private life. Normally, he said, there are dozens of great leaders whose conduct in public is absolutely contrary to their conduct in private life. But, the unique feature of Kalam was that he carried no pretensions and even in public life, behaved with the same child-like curiosity and simplicity which manifested when he was sitting alone in his living room.
Dwelling on APJ Kalam’s illustrious journey from Guindy Engineering College in Chennai to Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi, Dr Jitendra Singh said, Kalam was one of those Presidents who added to the grace and prestige of Rashtrapati Bhawan.

5000 Students Participated Dr Kalam 4th Year Remembrance Day Activities
A prelude to these
events was when we initiated another milestone of a massive one crore tree plantation drive. Dr.
APJ. Abdul Kalam Social Forest Scheme has undertaken a mission of planting more
than one crore tree saplings across 35 districts in the state of Tamil Nadu
with 3.6 lakh sapling per district. In keeping with the agenda of Vision 2020,
one of the ten point oath emphasized by Dr. Kalam was on plantation of trees.
Hence the foundation has devised a strategy to plant more than one crore tree
saplings.
The project was
inaugurated by the Honourable Governor of
Tamil Nadu, Shri Banwarilal Purohit on 28th March 2019 at Vel’s University.
The project had been immensely supported by Airport Authority of India. MoA were signed with Vel’s University and with Madurai Kamaraj
University, who would be sponsoring and supporting the plantation drive.
Nurseries are
planned across the 35 districts.
Usually, plantation drive involves procurement of saplings that is readily available.
But the foundation is determined to start from scratch right from procuring the
seeds and setting up nurseries to nurture the seedlings. 25 native varieties such as neem, banyan, casuarina, jamun trees etc
will be part of this drive. The saplings grown would be distributed to the
citizens, specifically to students of schools
and colleges, Corporates, government staffs and others. A declaration
certificate has to be signed by the beneficiaries before taking the saplings
that their sole intention is to contribute to the environmental cause to save
our earth.
The uniqueness of
this campaign is the development of an AKSF
APP by ITM for monitoring the growth of the sapling where the beneficiaries are
obliged to update their effort. This way, everyone who has a sapling under
their care would be committed in this massive drive. The beneficiaries
would be rewarded in order to stay motivated for the cause. The app has
features to support the plantation process. It has less storage size with dual
language support. It also gives information about the nearby nurseries for
obtaining the saplings, regular notifications helping in the better development
of the saplings etc.
A novel way to
create awareness about the project throughout the state would be through the
flagging off, of the AKSF campaign
vehicle sponsored by Airport Authority
of India. The vehicle will carry video bytes by notable ambassadors of the plantation
campaign. The current environmental aspects of the state would be shown and the
change this plantation drive could bring would also be projected.
The vehicle will
have the distinguished scientific exhibition of books authored by
Dr. Kalam. The
campaign vehicle will encourage the public to endorse this project and encourage
them to show their responsibility towards conserving the environment.
On 26th of July, at
10:30 AM, S. Satheesh Kumar, a three
time international gold medalist in Roller skating, would skate from
Pattainamkathan junction to Dr. Kalam’s memorial, covering a distance of 60km.
He would be creating a record by skating through the Pamban Bridge. The journey
is to create awareness regarding the plantation drive and also Dr. Kalam’s Vision 2020. This event would
be flagged off by the Collector of Ramanathapuram, Thiru Veera Raghava Rao.
Students of various institutions and the general public would be standing
throughout the distance on either side cheering and encouraging our champion.
Those present would also pledge to commit themselves to the cause of a social forest We would be glad if you could
support us for the success of the program and in the campaign for a
clean and green environment, and
be a part of another beautiful and a fruitful event, in memory our late
President.
PJ Abdul Kalam Save Forestry Project – Tree Plantation Drive across Tamilnadu inaugurated by Honorable Governor of Tamilnadu Shri Banwarilal Purohit at Vels University Chennai.
The program is to plant more than one crore tree saplings across the state of Tamil Nadu. The species of trees planted in each district will depend on the local weather and soil conditions. The saplings grown would be distributed to students of schools and colleges. A mobile app for monitoring the growth of every sapling was also demoed as part of the event today. The plantation drive will start on July 27th 2019 and will go on during Dr Abdul Kalam’s Vision year of 2020.
Hon’ble Governor spoke about how Dr Kalam ailing from a humble background had scaled great heights in his career, including Dr Kalam’s contribution apart from aviation and defence to taking healthcare for the masses – for example in 1998, along with the cardiologist Soma Raju, Dr Kalam developed a low cost coronary stent, named the “Kalam-Raju Stent”.
Governor retold an incident from history that he had recently read – that of, when Kota city in Rajasthan was being formed, and the main bazaar street was designed, the would-be shop keepers were ordered by the (then) ruler to plant a peepal tree in the back of every shop and be taken care of – a fine example of saving the environment and the surroundings we live in. Peepal tree is a species of fig native to the Indian subcontinent and is regarded sacred in India.
We are looking forward support for this project. If anybody interested please write to us contact@houseofkalam.org
